Far West Scallops has been a family owned and run business for over 40 years.  Renowned for the quality of our scallops, we operate our own fleet of trawlers and a world class factory based in Fremantle.  We catch and process Ballot’s Saucer scallop (Ylistrum Balloti) in the beautiful, clean waters of Shark Bay, the Abrolhos Islands and the South Coast of Western Australia.

In Asian markets, our scallops are considered a delicacy and are highly prized and valued for their sweet taste and firm texture.

History

Far West was started in 1983 by James and Mary Ch’ng with a single boat catching scallops in Shark Bay and a factory based in Carnarvon. As the business became more successful, more boats were added and Far West expanded into new fisheries.

Far West Scallops is now the largest packer of scallops in Australia. In 1998, Far West moved into its current premises. The factory received a significant upgrade in 2014 when a new production line was installed.

The business is still owned and operated by the Ch’ng family.

Fishing

Far West has a fleet of 4 fishing boats.

The West Australian scallop fishing season usually runs from December to July, with new season scallops available from January.

Sustainability

All Far West scallops are sustainably sourced from the pristine waters of Western Australia.  The scallops are harvested using otter trawl, which significantly reduces the by-catch and ground impact compared to other scallop harvesting methods.

In 2021, the Abrolhos Islands Scallop Fishery, one of the main fisheries accessed by Far West, was the first scallop fishery in Australia to receive MSC certification.
