Far West Scallops has been a family owned and run business for over 35 years.  Renowned for the quality of our scallops, we operate our own fleet of trawlers and a world class factory based in Fremantle.  We catch and process Ballot’s Saucer scallop (Ylistrum Balloti) in the beautiful, clean waters of Shark Bay, the Abrolhos Islands and the South Coast of Western Australia.

Ocean caught scallops

Far West Scallops fishes for and processes the Southern Saucer Scallop (Latin name: Amusium balloti), which is unique to Australia. The Southern Saucer scallop is found off the coast of much of Western Australia including in the pristine waters of the Abrolhos Islands, Shark Bay, and Western Australia’s South Coast where our fleet operates.

The most prized
species in Asia

In Asian markets, our scallops are considered a delicacy and are highly prized and valued for their sweet taste and firm texture.

History

Far West was started in 1983 by James and Mary Ch’ng with a single boat catching scallops in Shark Bay and a factory based in Carnarvon. As the business became more successful, more boats were added and Far West expanded into new fisheries.

In 1998, Far West moved into its current premises. The factory received a significant upgrade in 2014 when a new production line was installed. The business is still owned and operated by the Ch’ng family.

Fleet

We have a fleet of 6 fishing boats.

The fishing season generally extends from March to July (depending on the catch), and our Southern Saucer Scallops are available from April onwards.

Product of Australia

All Far West products are 100% Australian. All of our scallops are sustainably sourced from wild fisheries off the coast of Western Australia and processed in the Far West factory, located just south of Fremantle.

Processing

No water or chemicals are added during the processing of our scallops. We have 6 dedicated scallop fishing trawlers and a modern factory in Hamilton Hill, Western Australia, where most of our scallops are processed.

Sustainability

At Far West Scallops, we understand that the viability of our business relies on looking after the natural environment, which is why we carefully look after the oceans in which we fish. All of our fisheries undergo a rigorous assessment to assess the sustainability of fishing practices and management. In 2018, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation judged all fisheries in which Far West operates as sustainable. In the coming years we will be working with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the West Australian government to have our major fisheries assessed and certified as sustainable.
